Welcome to the Bowen Mysteries site. I’m focusing in this site on the three mysteries featuring Thomas Curry and Sandrine Cadette Curry. The series began with Badger Game, first published twenty-five years and three wars ago, and now being e-published for the first time. At the same time, I’ve had the good fortune to have a number of other mysteries published by first-rate houses with outstanding editors — Peter Ginna and Barbara Peters, notably — and I’ve included information about some of them as well.
Set in the early 1960′s, the Thomas-and-Sandy stories are framed by cultural and historical events that were memory for me but are history for the majority of readers today. I’ve always loved “plucky couple” mysteries, but I didn’t want Thomas and Sandy to come off as clones of Nick and Nora Charles or Jerry and Susan North (or even Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane). Sandy’s function is not to stumble over corpses on her way to Macy’s, contrive to get herself in mortal peril in time to be rescued by a handy male, and then to make some dizzy, off-hand comment that accidentally solves the mystery. A fellow mystery writer once defined a “cozy” as a mystery in which you might be shot, stabbed, or poisoned, but you will not be punched. The Thomas-and-Sandy stories ain’t cozies.
I’d love to hear from you. I hope you enjoy the stories but, if you don’t, fake it: I have a fragile ego.
